Cooler Cover Materials Guide
Compare polyester, canvas, vinyl, mesh, and insulated fabrics for evaporative cooler covers — and choose the right material for your climate and installation.
Polyester (300D–900D Oxford)
Polyester is the most common cooler-cover fabric because it balances cost, weight, and weather resistance. Denier (D) indicates thread thickness: 300D is lighter and suited to sheltered installs; 600D is the industry workhorse for residential and light commercial units; 900D canvas-style polyester handles large spans and rooftop exposure.

Canvas
Canvas covers use a heavier woven base (often cotton-poly blend or polyester canvas) with a rugged hand-feel. They resist abrasion and punctures better than light polyester, which matters on industrial sites and rooftop units with sharp flashing or gravel.
- Heavier than 600D polyester — plan for stronger tie-downs on large covers
- Often paired with PU or wax-style treatments for water resistance (not fully waterproof without lamination)
- Popular on commercial and extra-large cooler covers
- Allow extra drying time after rain before storage to prevent mildew on natural-fiber blends
Vinyl & PVC-Backed Fabrics
Vinyl and PVC-backed polyester deliver the highest rain protection. Sealed seams and a waterproof rating (e.g. 5000 mm hydrostatic head) keep water out of pads and cabinets during off-season storage. These fabrics are stiffer and louder in wind than oxford polyester.

Mesh
High-density polyester mesh blocks leaves, dust, and pests while allowing airflow. Mesh is not a winter cover — use it in-season or in mild climates where condensation under a solid cover is a concern.
- Typical mesh aperture: ~1 mm for debris filtration without starving airflow
- Ultra-light (0.3–0.6 kg) — easy on/off during operating season
- Pairs well with solid winter covers: mesh in summer, insulated or solid cover in winter

Insulated Materials
Insulated covers add a foam or thermal lining (commonly 3–5 mm) to reduce freeze risk, block drafts, and slow temperature swing inside the cabinet. They are thicker and need slightly larger clearances than uninsulated covers.
- Recommended for winter storage and cold-climate off-season protection
- Condensation management: ensure the unit is dry before covering; vented hem designs help
