Cooler Cover Installation Guide
How to install evaporative and swamp cooler covers on wall-mount, rooftop, and window units — including wind tie-down and safety checks.
Pre-Installation Checklist
Confirm the cooler is off, water drained, and pads are dry. Remove debris from the cabinet top and verify your cover orientation (tagged front/back if applicable). Inspect tie-down straps, drawcords, and grommets before climbing to a rooftop unit.
- Power off at disconnect — never cover a running unit
- Drain pan and water lines; dry 24 hours minimum
- Clear leaves and grit from the cabinet top
- Lay out cover and identify front, back, and opening alignment
Basic Installation Steps
Drape the cover over the cabinet starting from the highest point on down-draft units (or from the back on side-draft wall units). Pull the hem evenly around all sides before tightening. Secure the elastic hem or drawcord last so fabric seats flat without twisting.
- Down-draft: align top panel first, then pull skirt down over corners
- Side-draft: fit over top, then work hem under bottom flange
- Zippered openings: close zippers after hem is positioned
- Stand back and check for bunched fabric that can hold water
Rooftop Installation
Use fall protection and a helper when possible. Route tie-downs to structural anchors — not loose conduit or pipe straps. Corner webbing on rooftop-grade covers accepts bungee or ratchet straps; avoid overtightening which can tear grommets.
- OSHA-compliant ladder and harness for roof work
- Four-point tie-down in high-wind zones
- Reflective top panel faces up — verify orientation
- Do not trap standing water — confirm drainage grommets are open
Securing in High Winds
In sustained winds above 40 mph (64 km/h), use all provided tie-down points and choose 600D or heavier fabric. Cross straps over the top can supplement corner ties on extra-large covers. Inspect after major storms and retighten when fabric relaxes.
- Ratchet straps preferred over single bungees for large commercial covers
- Avoid sharp edges — use corner protectors if straps contact metal flashing
- Re-tighten 48 hours after first install — fabric relaxes initially
- Remove cover before high-wind events if not rated for your exposure class
