Vented vs Closed Cooler Covers

1 min read

Still cold indoors with a cover on, or pads got wet under a "breathable" cover in winter? Mesh and vented fabrics are for in-season idle only — winter needs solid closure.

Need the quick reference first? Mesh vs solid fabrics

Problem: Wrong Closure for the Season

Mesh keeps dust off idle summer units while air flows. Used at winter shutdown, cold outdoor air passes straight through — drafts continue and rain soaks pads. Teams sometimes pick mesh because it is lighter and cheaper; the failure shows up as cold rooms and wet pads in spring.

Solution: Closed for Shutdown, Vented for Idle

  • Closed solid fabric — after full drain/dry shutdown; blocks drafts, rain, and pests
  • Mesh / vented — idle unit during cooling season in dusty yards; not winter
  • At shutdown: swap mesh for solid cover — do not leave mesh on through winter

Interior Duct Still Drafting?

A solid cover seals outdoor intakes only. If rooms stay cold, check the interior duct damper or panel inside the house — cover fabric cannot fix an open duct path.
