Canvas vs Polyester Swamp Cooler Covers
4 min read
Compare breathability, rain resistance, UV stability, shrinkage, and care before specifying canvas or coated polyester for an evaporative cooler cover.
Canvas is the more breathable choice; coated polyester is usually the more practical choice for rain, UV exposure, and low-maintenance outdoor storage. The correct answer depends on whether the cooler is dry, where it sits while unused, and how the cover is ventilated and secured.
Canvas and Coated Polyester at a Glance
Fit and fabric work together. A breathable material used under a roof may fail in driving rain, while a heavily coated shell can hold condensation if a wet cooler is sealed without ventilation. Choose for the worst storage condition, not the average day.
| Factor | Canvas | Coated polyester or Oxford |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Cotton or cotton-blend weave with optional water-repellent treatment | Synthetic weave with PU or PVC backing |
| Strongest point | Breathability and natural appearance | Rain resistance and lower maintenance |
| Main limitation | Can absorb water and needs reproofing; prolonged UV weakens fibers | Heavy coatings breathe less and may need designed vents |
| Shape stability | May shrink after repeated wet and dry cycles | Holds dimensions well through wet and dry cycles |
| Care | Dry fully and renew water-repellent treatment when needed | Wipe or rinse; dry fully before storage |
Breathability
Canvas allows more water vapor through its weave, even when treated. That can help on a dry unit stored under a roof. Coated polyester breathes less as coating weight increases; PVC allows very little vapor movement. Vents or screened mesh panels can be added where condensation risk requires airflow, but no fabric replaces draining and drying the cooler before it is covered.
Rain Resistance and Seams
Freshly treated canvas sheds light rain, but exposure gradually wears down the finish. Coated polyester gives more consistent rain protection and normally needs less retreatment. Stitching holes, zipper openings, and pooled water remain weak points on either material; specify sealed or taped seams and a top that sheds water when the site sees sustained rain.
UV, Heat, and Dimensional Stability
Natural canvas fibers fade and weaken under prolonged intense sun. UV-stabilized polyester usually performs better in exposed desert or rooftop sites, especially in a lighter color. Canvas can also shrink after repeated wetting and drying, while polyester is more dimensionally stable. Pattern allowance must match the selected fabric before cutting.
Material Guidance by Climate
Site exposure matters more than the region name, but these starting points help narrow the specification.
- Wet or frosty European winters → vented coated polyester; canvas works better under a covered terrace or indoors
- Gulf heat, sun, and sand → light-colored UV-stabilized polyester with a tight hem; shaded inland storage may suit canvas
- North African coast → coated polyester for rain and salt exposure; dry interior sites can use either material based on shade and dust sealing
- Humid Central and South American rainy seasons → coated polyester with designed ventilation; never cover wet pads
- North American snow or rain → coated polyester; dry shaded storage can use canvas
- Indoor restaurants, cafés, shops, and workshops → canvas or lightly coated breathable polyester where dust and grease matter more than rain
Quick Material Decision
Start with the most severe condition the idle cooler will face.
- Repeated rain, snow, or humidity → coated polyester with drainage and ventilation appropriate to the site
- Dry climate under a roof or in shade → canvas is a breathable option
- Strong daily UV → UV-stabilized polyester in a lighter color
- Dust and sand → either fabric with a close-fitting hem and suitable tie-downs
- Indoor storage → breathable dust cover that is easy to remove and clean
Specify the Whole Cover, Not Only the Fabric
A useful quote also defines dimensions, ventilation, seam treatment, fastening, openings, color, quantity, and destination. Canvas, PU-coated polyester, PVC-coated polyester, or a hybrid construction can be paired with vents, mesh panels, straps, buckles, zippers, and access openings. Typical production takes 10–14 business days after specifications and artwork are approved; transit time is separate.
